A 1300-year-old Hindu Vishnu Temple was discovered by Pakistani and Italien archaeological experts at a mountain in the Swat district of northwest Pakistan.

The discovery was made during an excavation at Barikot Ghundai.

Fazle Khaliq of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Department of Archaeology said the temple discovered is of God Vishnu and it was built during the Hindu Shahi period. The Vishnu Temple excavated is about 1300 years old.

The Hindu Shahis Dynasty was ruling the Kabul valley (eastern Afghanistan), Gandhara (modern-day Pakistan), and even present-day northwestern India from 850-1026 CE, Hindu Shahis or Kabul Shahis was formed after the fall of the Turk Shashi Kingdom in 850 CE.

Finding in excavation, included cantonment and watchtowers near the temple site. Archaeologists also found a water tank near the temple site which they believed used by the Hindus for bathing before worship.

Khaliq also said that the Swat district is home to thousand-year-old archaeology sites and the traces of the Hindu Shahi period have been found for the first time in the area.

Dr. Luka, is the head of the Italian archaeological mission in Pakistan, said that "This is the first temple of the Ghandhara civilization discovered in Swat district"
