For space situational awareness ISRO sets up a dedicated control centre in Bangalore.

India's first space situational awareness centre has been established by ISRO in Bangalore within the ISTRAC campus at Peenya. Through this centre, ISRO is aiming at tracking, monitoring and protecting Indian satellite.

The control centre was inaugurated by Chairman, ISRO and Secretary, Department of Space K Sivan on 14 December.

The new Space Situational Awareness(SSA) centre will help Indian scientists in finding the space debris and other hazards to Indian satellites. The new set up has given India its own capability in space situational awareness like the other space power of the world. The total cost of the SSA is about Rs 400 crore.

How important is SSA set up to ISRO?
ISRO has set an example of perfect atmanirbhar Bharat by inaugurating NETRA. By the new set up ISRO can monitor fragments floating towards their spacecraft. Monitoring debris becomes very important in space has a piece of debris that can collide with a satellite and damage satellite from performing its work. Space agencies constantly lookout for space debris at the time of launch and throughout the life of the satellite.
The SSA will first be for low-earth orbits, which have remote sensing spacecraft.

The dedicated lab will perform various R&D activities such as object fragmentation and break up modelling, space debris population and micro-meteoroid environment modelling, space weather studies, near-earth objects, planetary defence studies.

Future plan of NETRA is to capture the GEO scene at 36,000 km, where communication satellites operate.
